My Favorite Movies Series: Part 1
I am starting this series with my all-time favorite movie, The Mummy (1999). The cast includes; Brendan Fraser(Rick O’Connell), Rachel Weisz(Evelyn/Evie), Arnold Vosloo (Imhotep), John Hannah(Jonathan), Oded Fehr(Ardeth), and many more! This movie came out in May of 1999 and changed my view on movies. I grew up in a family who loved movies and going to see them in theaters. We even saw this in theaters three times on the SAME DAY. It was just a dad and his four kids watching the movie over and over again. The Mummy is one of the first movies that made me fall in love with films. As you see above, how much I love this movie, I even have a signed movie poster from Brendan Fraser!
To this day, I watch this movie more than ten times a year, it’s my go-to film, and I just rewatched it again tonight. This movie is filled with action, adventure, comedy, romance, and thriller, a perfect combo for an excellent film!
Overall the CGI was advanced for the time it came out(it still looks AMAZING!), the cast/characters were terrific, the plot was excellent, the sets/scenery was beautiful, and it was a great remake of The Mummy (1932). This movie flows easily, and I enjoy every part from start to finish.
Brendan Fraser’s comedic delivery was spot on and, to this day, makes me laugh, even though I can recite the whole film. Some of his best parts are screaming at the mummified Imhotep, the boat scene between his character and Beni’s, when they are flying in the airplane to save Evie, and his commentary throughout the film. Rachel Weisz’s character was by far my favorite in the movie. I had to name my new kitten Evie too! I love how she betrays a clever, intelligent, brave, confident, and stubborn woman with a SPARK(I am a librarian!). I love that Evie is the main translater in the movie to help everyone in different scenes; trying to find the Book of the Living (“Take that, Bembridge Scholars”), helping her brother (It’s a bird, a stork! Amenophus!”) and reading from the Book of the Dead (even though she should not have read from that book). The romance between Rick and Evie was beautifully done in the movie (a romantic myself), giving her gifts, being kind of a gentleman to her, but mostly letting her do her thing and being there for her.
In my books, Rick and Evie are the best hero and heroine. They work together to save the day, and even Jonathan helps! The other characters brought to the movie are; Jonathan, the best older brother with the comic relief; Ardeth, the best sidekick and ally needed to stop Imhotep; and Beni, another comic relief (his best scenes were with Rick). Dr. Terence Bey, the moody museum curator but secret agent to keep Imhotep hidden, the American group helped with comic relief and thriller scenes. I can’t forget the main villain, Imhotep; with him, we have a main character that brings all these characters together. Each character has a purpose and something they can give to help to end the curse of Imhotep, even though sometimes it doesn’t help. Overall these characters are more human and relatable than in other films. I can rewatch this film a million times, and each time it still makes me enjoy it like I am watching it for the first time. Even better, they made a second film, The Mummy Returns (2001).
I highly recommend watching this movie if you have yet to see it!
This is my first post in my favorite movie series, where I will post short reviews on my favorite movies, explaining my favorite parts, and why I love this movie so much. I hope you enjoy my new series!
