Another one of my all-time favorite movies is The Matrix (1999). The cast included; Keanu Reeves (Neo), Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus), Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith), and many more!
The Matrix became one of my favorite movies due to the concept of the plot, being a science fiction action film with some romance, and the action scenes (especially the lobby scene, virtual training scene, and the rooftop scene).
The plot focuses on a world where machines have taken over and placed humans in a simulated reality to control humans, but also, the A.I. use our brain for energy. The humans don’t know that this is happening to them, and they are prisoners in this virtual world stuck in 1999. The main character Thomas Anderson (Aka Neo), questions the world he lives in and discovers the truth about both worlds.
I liked this idea because it shows a scary outlook on what will become the more we depend on technology. The Wachowski sisters bring us into a world that is more believable the more time passes. The characters in this world can decide if they want to live in the real world or an artificial world(take the red pill or blue pill), to have free choices/freedom, about their complex system of minds, A.I./machine’s mission and the overall concept of control and who is really in control.
A part of the plot I loved is how Neo shows the abilities of the prophesied “the One,” the chosen human to save humankind. She tells him he is not the One when they visit the Oracle. At the movie’s end, we find out that he is, in fact, the One and will help the humans in The Matrix. I like this storyline because, at that time, he doubted that he was the One, but to become the One, he had to believe (mind over matter), and his future actions led him. The second and third movie explains more about the Matrix, humans, and A.I.’s relationship and gives insight into the world.
The action scenes with the different types of fighting styles and the direction of how each scene was filmed made another loveable experience. I love the virtual training scene with a sprinkle of some science fiction of humans using the Matrix to download skills. DOWNLOADING skills! From fighting to programming the brain to fly a helicopter, think about what we could learn if we could do that in real life. The lobby scene was the best scene of the whole movie! It was perfectly put together, with the character outfits, hiding their weapons, bringing a bag of weapons, shooting up the entire area, and MAINLY the fighting and shooting combo. Fantastic! A mindblowing scene for that time. Then adding the slow motion bullet dodging scene to top it off for being an AMAZING action movie.
The Déjà vu detail, where Neo sees the same cat action twice, which means the agents messed with the Matrix, was an incredible detail to add. Making something so small that we all experience it in real life gives us a reality and makes us question if we are the ones stuck in a simulation.
So reader, blue pill or red pill?
