Like many 90s kids, I grew up playing the Mario video games on the original Nintendo console, the Game Boy, Nintendo DS, and Wii. These were not just my favorite games to play, but they were the first. We still break out the old trusty dusty Super Nintendo and play to this day.
When I heard they were making a movie about the brothers, I was nervous and not looking forward to it. Then headlines started to travel across the world about who they hired for the leading role of Mario and got backlash from the public. The negative headlines made me think that it was another video game that Hollywood was driving into a movie for money and not to bring some enjoyment for us moviegoers for 1 hour and 32 minutes.
But let me tell you, this movie was SSSSOOOOO GOOD! It is perfect for all ages and a must-see in the theaters. The comedy, action-packed scenes, script, soundtrack, and animation turned excellent video game characters into good movie characters. The best thing about this film was the nostalgia of the Mario video game franchise, including the original music and sound from the games. They brought in all different characters and games as Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart (my all-time favorite game from this franchise), and many more.
Jack Black’s performance as Bowser was another reason I fell in love with this movie. He brought some part of himself to the character of Bowser and added the perfect touch to the film’s comedy. Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong) all did some great work as their characters.
From the start to the end, this film was made for the fans that grew up playing these games but also brings new light for the younger generation to fall in love with these characters and start playing the video games. If you are a fan or not, this film is great for spending an hour and a half of your time laughing and enjoying a great movie.
